Materials first, then the build
A landscaping job starts with a lorry of stone and a skip, both paid for before anything looks like progress. Take a deposit against materials, stage the payments through the build and invoice on completion.
Overdue invoices chase themselves.
One card rate of 2.5% plus 35p, with the platform fee inside it.
Set up in 2 minutes. No credit card required.

Build it, then maintain it
The build is the big number, but the garden you designed needs maintaining, and that is recurring revenue from a customer who already trusts you. Offer the maintenance contract before you leave site.
Unlimited customers and jobs.
Unlimited customer records on every plan, yours to export at any time.

Running a landscapers business
A garden build is two thirds groundwork that nobody photographs. The client bought a picture of a terrace and the first three weeks are a digger, a mountain of spoil and a garden that looks considerably worse than it did before you arrived.
Charge for the design or stop drawing them
A plan carrying levels, falls, drainage, a planting schedule and a named materials list takes days to produce. Handed over free it becomes a shopping list the client walks round to a cheaper contractor.
Price it as its own piece of work, deliver it as its own piece of work and credit it against the build if they proceed. Clients who pay for a drawing are a different species from clients collecting numbers.
It settles the specification as well. Once a stone is named and a fall is dimensioned, the argument about what was included has nowhere left to happen.
Where the money goes on a garden build
| Part of the job | Share of the cost | Who gets paid first |
|---|---|---|
| Groundwork, muck away and disposal | A large slice, invisible once finished | The skip company and the tip, on the day |
| Hard landscaping and materials | The single biggest outlay | The merchant, before anything is delivered |
| Subcontractors and plant hire | Small but unforgiving | The electrician and the hire yard, weekly |
| Planting, turf and irrigation | The last and the smallest | You, if the budget survived the groundwork |
The planting is what sells the garden and it is the first line a client cuts when the digging ran over. Protect it inside the staged payments rather than hoping.
The ground is never what the drawing assumed
A terrace set at the level on the plan meets a manhole nobody knew about, made ground full of buried brick or a boundary sitting three hundred millimetres from where the deeds imply it should. All of that is normal and none of it is free.
Photograph what comes out of the hole on the day it comes out, price the variation before it turns into work and get it agreed in writing. A dated picture of a Victorian soakaway settles a conversation that words never will.
What turns a profitable garden into a break even one
- Muck away priced by the skip when the spoil turns out to be twice the volume of the hole
- A client who moves the terrace two metres after the sub base has gone in
- Stone ordered in one batch and then topped up from a pallet that does not match
- A planting scheme specified in March and installed in the middle of a July drought
The build is the start of the customer, not the end
Somebody who has just spent a substantial sum on a garden now owns a garden that has to be kept. Raise the maintenance at handover while they are standing in it and delighted, rather than in a letter next spring when the borders have gone over.
Keep the planting schedule, the stone, the pointing mix and the irrigation layout against the property. A matching replacement three years later is then something you price from a record instead of a site visit.
It is also the most photographable trade of the lot. A finished garden shot from the exact position of the before picture wins more work than anything you could pay to place in front of anyone.
What should be agreed before the digger arrives
- A paid design showing levels, falls and where the water is going
- A deposit that covers the stone actually on order rather than a token percentage
- Stage payments tied to visible milestones rather than to calendar dates
- Who is disposing of the spoil, and the basis that was priced on
- Access, because a rear garden reached through a house changes every cost on the job
