Lessons paid in cash at the kerb are lessons you sometimes do not get paid for. A pupil who cancels on the morning has cost you the slot. Put regular pupils on a weekly slot that charges a saved card before each lesson and apply your notice period consistently.

Running a driving school
A driving instructor sells the same hour to the same pupil thirty or forty times and then never sees them again. Every name in the diary is on a countdown to a test date. The business is a queue of countdowns arranged so that they do not all run out in the same fortnight.
The diary is a route, not a list of names
An hour with a pupil in one village followed by an hour in a town twelve minutes away is not two hours of work. It is two hours and a quarter. The quarter is fuel, wear and time that nobody paid for.
Sequence the day geographically and pick up in an order that flows. Instructors who do this teach eight lessons in the time others teach six, in the same car, at the same rate.
It is also why a standing weekly slot is worth defending even when a pupil asks to shift it. One move is nothing. A diary where everybody moves every week collapses into an afternoon of driving between appointments that could have sat back to back.
Reputation in this trade is a number. It markets itself. Pupils who pass first time tell everyone they know and instructors with waiting lists have usually earned them by declining to put somebody in for a test they are not ready for. Presenting a pupil early wins one paid hour and costs the recommendation.
