Running a driving instructors business
A driving instructor sells the same hour to the same pupil thirty or forty times and then never sees them again. Every name in the diary is on a countdown to a test date, and the business is a queue of countdowns arranged so that they do not all run out in the same fortnight.
The diary is a route, not a list of names
An hour with a pupil in one village followed by an hour in a town twelve minutes away is not two hours of work. It is two hours and a quarter, and the quarter is fuel, wear and time that nobody paid for.
Sequence the day geographically and pick up in an order that flows. Instructors who do this teach eight lessons in the time others teach six, in the same car, at the same rate.
It is also why a standing weekly slot is worth defending even when a pupil asks to shift it. One move is nothing. A diary where everybody moves every week collapses into an afternoon of driving between appointments that could have sat back to back.
Reputation in this trade is a number, and it markets itself. Pupils who pass first time tell everyone they know, and instructors with waiting lists have usually earned them by declining to put somebody in for a test they are not ready for. Presenting a pupil early wins one paid hour and costs the recommendation.
A pupil from the first lesson to the test
| Stage | What it looks like | What it needs from you |
|---|---|---|
| The first few hours | Quiet roads, clutch control and a great deal of anxiety | A block sold, so the pupil is committed past the hard part |
| The long middle | Steady weekly progress, and by far the longest phase | A syllabus record the pupil can watch moving |
| Approaching test standard | Manoeuvres, mock tests and independent driving | The test date already booked, because the wait can be long |
| Test week | A longer session beforehand and the use of your car | Pricing that reflects a morning held for one pupil |
| After the pass | They are gone, and thrilled about it | A review and a referral, asked for on the day |
The gap between reaching test standard and sitting the test is dead ground. Pupils who stop lessons in it arrive rusty, and instructors who keep them ticking over hold the income and the pass rate together.
What a well run instructor does
- Sells blocks up front and draws one lesson down at a time
- Builds the week as a route rather than a list of names
- Holds standing slots and moves them rarely
- Gets the test date booked early and works backwards from it
- Records syllabus progress so the pupil can see what is left
- Sends a reminder the evening before, which removes most morning cancellations
- Keeps a waiting list, since a pass frees an hour at almost no notice
- Asks for the review and the referral on the day of the pass
What the hourly rate has to cover
- Fuel, which moves with the pump price and never with your price list
- Insurance, servicing and tyres on a car doing heavy mileage at low speeds all week
- Dual controls, and a vehicle replaced far sooner than a private one would be
- The hours spent driving between pupils, unpaid however you look at them
- Enquiries answered, test dates arranged and a week rebuilt every time somebody moves
- Any block bought at last year's price and taught at this year's costs
