The round, billed without knocking
Garden maintenance is a round of small regular visits, and collecting for it by hand eats an evening a week. Recurring payments per garden, one-off charges for the extras and no more cash in an envelope under a plant pot.
Recurring billing handled for you.
One card rate of 2.5% plus 35p, with the platform fee inside it.
Set up in 2 minutes. No credit card required.

Twelve months, not one summer
The gardener who disappears in October has to win the round back in April. Keep the customer through the quiet months with autumn tidies and winter work, and let the schedule roll over rather than restart.
Unlimited customers and properties.
Unlimited customer records on every plan, yours to export at any time.
Set up in 2 minutes. No credit card required.

Running a gardeners business
Garden maintenance is paid by the hour and the plants decide how many hours there are. Between May and September the same garden takes half as long again as it did in March, and hardly anyone prices for that.
Why a flat hourly rate underpays a gardener in June
- A lawn that took twenty minutes in April takes thirty five in June, and it is due every ten days instead of every three weeks
- The volume of green waste roughly doubles, and moving it is time, fuel and a charge at the other end
- The only reason more work fits into a summer day is daylight, and daylight is not something anybody can invoice
- The visit a customer cancels is always the one in the week the money was already spoken for
- Winter visits get judged against a summer expectation, so the hardest half of the year is the half that looks expensive
The maintenance year on a domestic round
| Months | What the round is doing | What should also be selling |
|---|---|---|
| March and April | First cuts, everything at once, every customer rings the same fortnight | Standing arrangements rather than one-off tidies |
| May to August | Cutting on a ten day cycle, hedges from July onward | Hedge work priced as its own job, not squeezed into the visit |
| September and October | Growth stops, leaves start, the round feels slow | Clearances, borders cut back, gutters and jet washing |
| November to February | Two visits a month at most | Pruning, structural work, turf repairs and planting |
The gardener who stops in October has to sell the round all over again in April. The one who keeps a reduced winter visit keeps the customer, the slot and the position on the street.
A round is a shape rather than a list
Twelve gardens in one village is a business. Twelve gardens spread across fifteen miles is a driving job with some gardening in it. The difference never shows up in the hourly rate, it shows up in how many gardens fit into a Tuesday.
That makes turning work down a commercial decision rather than a rude one. An enquiry ten minutes off the route has to earn the round trip before it earns anything, and taking it usually costs a slot you could have sold to somebody already on the run.
Say what is in the visit and what sits outside it
The awkward conversation in this trade is always about scope. A customer who books two hours means two hours of gardening, and she has quietly included clearing the shed, moving a tree fern and running three bags of rubble to the tip.
Green waste deserves stating in particular. Taking arisings away costs fuel, time and a fee when you get there, and a gardener absorbing that on every visit is running a disposal service he never charged anybody for.
Hedge cuts, clearances, turfing and pressure washing sit outside the round and get priced as their own work. Written down at the start, the customer asking for them is a sale rather than an imposition.
What a maintenance round needs written down
- A cycle per garden, tighter in summer and longer in winter, agreed once
- Payment that runs on the arrangement rather than on a knock at the door
- Exactly what the visit includes, and what is quoted separately
- Whether green waste leaves with you, and what that adds
- Gate codes, dogs, where the outside tap is and what must never be cut back
- A winter pattern agreed in September rather than abandoned in October
- Which gardens sit on which run, so a new enquiry is judged first by where it lives
