Paid on the driveway, not on account

A mobile mechanic carries the parts, the diagnosis and the risk, on someone else's drive with no forecourt to hold the car on. Take a deposit before you order the part and the balance before you pack up.

VAT returns with a 9 box export.

One card rate of 2.5% plus 35p, with the platform fee inside it.

MOT due dates you already know

Every car you touch has an MOT and a service due, and a mobile mechanic who reminds the owner gets the work without advertising for it. Youzse reads the due date from the registration and sends the reminder.

History follows the registration.

Running a mobile mechanics business

A mobile mechanic has no premises, no ramp and no counter. The workshop is a van, the bay is somebody else's driveway, and the invoice has to be settled before you drive away, because after that there is nothing left to hold.

Jobs a driveway cannot take

  • Anything needing the car properly in the air for longer than a trolley jack ought to hold it
  • Work running over two days on a road where the car cannot safely be left
  • A job on a slope, on loose gravel or in a shared car park with nobody's permission to be there
  • Heavy fluid changes with nowhere lawful to put what comes out
  • Diagnostics needing a road test the owner has not authorised
  • Anything where rain arriving at noon turns a routine morning into an unfinished car

What a day of callouts is actually made of

Part of the dayWhat it costs youWhat it should have been
Driving between jobsFuel and an hour or two of unbilled timeThree jobs within a few miles, booked as one run
Waiting on a parts deliveryA driveway you cannot leave and cannot bill forParts collected on the way or the job set for the next day
The diagnosis before the quoteGiven free, and usually the most skilled part of itCharged as its own visit, credited against the repair
The repair itselfThe only part anybody thinks they are paying forQuoted as labour time and parts, separately and in writing
Getting paidA phone call a fortnight later, then another oneContactless on the driveway before the tools go back in

Two of those five lines are almost always unpaid, and both belong inside the price of the fourth once anybody works the rate out properly.

Paid before the van moves

A garage holds the keys. You hold nothing, so the moment the bonnet closes your invoice turns into a favour you are asking for. Take the card on the driveway, before the tools go back in, every time and without making exceptions for regulars.

Parts are the other exposure. A part ordered against one registration fits one car and has no resale value, so a deposit covering it is not a test of trust. It is the difference between a cancelled job and a box in the van you will never sell.

Extra work found half way through has to be approved in writing from the driveway, with a photograph. The owner is often at work and the conversation is often by message, which is exactly why a picture of the split boot settles it in one exchange instead of three.

What a well run mobile operation does

  • Takes the card payment on site before packing up
  • Takes a deposit before ordering a part specific to a registration
  • Quotes call-out, labour and parts as separate lines so all three are understood
  • Gets extra work approved by message with a photograph attached
  • Books the day as a geographic run rather than in order of enquiry
  • Holds a stated radius and charges beyond it instead of absorbing the miles
  • Keeps history against the registration so the second visit starts from the first
  • Declines the jobs a driveway cannot take, early and without apologising

The plate is the customer record

People forget what was done and when. The vehicle does not. Job history, parts fitted and what you advised belong against the registration, because the registration is the thing that comes back, occasionally with a different owner attached to it.

That record is also the cheapest repeat work available to a one van operation. Knowing what you last found, and when the next service or test falls due, turns a one off callout into somebody who rings you rather than searching again. Youzse starts from £19 a month, with a thirty day free trial that does not ask for a card.
