Running a music teachers business
A music teacher sells half an hour at an instrument, repeated every week of term for years on end. Nothing else on this site has a unit that small or a relationship that long, and almost every problem in the trade comes out of that combination.
The half hour rate is not the hourly rate
Thirty pounds for thirty minutes reads like sixty an hour and very rarely is. Teaching in pupils' homes puts ten minutes in the car between each one, so five lessons occupy four hours and pay for two and a half of them.
Teaching from one room reverses that completely. The same five pupils arrive back to back, the piano never moves and the afternoon holds eight lessons instead of five. For a teacher who currently drives, it is the single largest change in earnings available.
Where travel has to happen, cluster it. One village on a Tuesday and another on a Thursday is worth more than an efficient looking diary that crosses the county twice in a day.

The wall is theory. Plenty of pupils who love playing stall the moment progress depends on paperwork, and that is a retention problem wearing a syllabus costume. Teachers who see it coming put theory in early and in a group, where it is cheaper for the family and much less lonely for the pupil.
Keep repertoire, grades and entry deadlines on a record rather than in a notebook by the piano. A missed entry deadline costs a term of momentum, and the pupil never blames the deadline.
