Infills booked before she leaves

Nails have a built-in return date. Two to three weeks and she needs infills, and whoever asks first gets the booking. Rebook at the desk, and if she does not, the reminder does it for you.

Running a nail technicians business

Nails carry the most predictable return cycle in beauty and one of the highest product costs per appointment. Both of those should be visible in how the business is priced, and in most cases neither of them is.

What a nail appointment actually consumes

AppointmentDesk timeWhat it consumes besides your time
Gel polish on natural nailsAbout an hourVery little product, so almost all of it is labour
A full set of extensionsTwo hours or moreTips or forms, builder gel or acrylic, files and lamp time
Infills at three weeksAn hour or soProduct on the regrowth only, which is why it is the profitable one
Infills at six weeksClose to a full setEffectively a rebalance, very rarely charged as one

Pricing by service name rather than by desk time and product is how the most skilled work in the trade becomes the least profitable hour of the day.

The three week cycle is the whole diary

Two to three weeks after a set she needs infills, and whoever asks first takes the booking. That is usually whoever has a system rather than whoever did the better work, which is an uncomfortable thing to be true.

Rebook at the desk while she is still admiring them. Where she will not commit, time the prompt to the set she actually had, because a builder gel overlay and a full set of long extensions grow out on completely different schedules.

Price infills by the gap. A client at three weeks and a client at six weeks are two different appointments, and charging both the same trains everybody to leave it as long as they possibly can.

Where a nail business leaks money

  • Art charged at one flat price whether it took ten minutes or fifty
  • Removals absorbed as a courtesy, usually on somebody else's work
  • Repairs done free in the doorway between two booked clients
  • A two hour set lost to a no show, which on a full day is a quarter of the takings
  • Travel time on mobile work costed at nothing at all
  • A client drifting from a three week cycle to a five week one, unnoticed for a year

The record protects you as much as it serves her

Shape, length, colour codes, which system you built in and what lifted last time all belong against the client. It makes the next appointment quicker and the result consistent, which is most of what loyalty amounts to in this trade.

Reactions matter more here than technicians expect. Uncured acrylates cause genuine allergic contact dermatitis, and once somebody is sensitised she is sensitised permanently. A dated note of the product used and what happened is a record. Remembering that she was fine last time is not.

What a well run nail business does

  • Prices by desk time and product rather than by the name of the service
  • Charges separately for removals, repairs and art
  • Rebooks the infill at the desk before she leaves
  • Prices infills by how long she left it
  • Records shape, system, colour codes and any reaction against the client
  • Takes a deposit on the long sets that block a desk for two hours
  • Counts product cost per set rather than per order
