Get paid on the day, not in ninety
The gap between finishing a job and seeing the money is where plumbing businesses run out of cash. Take a deposit before you order parts, tap the card on the doorstep when you finish and let overdue invoices chase themselves.

The property remembers, so you do not have to
Which boiler is in that airing cupboard, where the stopcock is, what you fitted eighteen months ago and which landlord pays the bill. Job history sits against the property and the customer, so the second visit is quicker and quoted right.

Running a plumbers business
Plumbing is two trades sharing one van. One of them is a burst at seven on a Sunday that is paid before you leave the drive. The other is a bathroom quoted in February, fitted in April and still unpaid in June. Running both without noticing is how a busy plumber ends up short of money.
The emergency half is easy money and a hard reputation
A burst is bought on availability alone. Whoever answers gets it, the price is barely discussed and the customer pays gratefully on the spot. There is no better cash position in any trade here.
It is also where the trade's reputation gets made and lost, because the customer cannot judge the work and can only judge the bill. Give the out of hours figure on the phone, before the van moves, and the doorstep conversation simply never happens.
Answering is most of it. A missed call at seven on a Sunday is not a lead to follow up on Monday, it is a job somebody else has already finished and been paid for.
The planned half is where the lending happens
A boiler is a four figure order placed before you have earned anything at all, and a bathroom is a fortnight of labour plus sanitaryware, tiles and a tiler you are paying out of your own account.
Take a deposit when the order goes in, take a stage payment when the old one comes out and take the balance before you hand over the paperwork. Say all three at quote stage and hardly anybody objects, because that is obviously how a large purchase works.
The lines that never make it onto a bathroom quote
- Lifting a floor to move a soil connection two hundred millimetres
- A tiler, an electrician and a plasterer, all coordinated by you and none of them paid by the customer
- Skip hire, and getting the old suite out of a first floor room
- Making good around new pipework, which the customer assumed was yours and you assumed was theirs
What comes back, and who remembers it
| Work | When it is due again | Who is keeping track |
|---|---|---|
| A boiler service | Annually, dated from the install | Nobody, unless you tell them |
| A landlord's gas visit | On whatever cycle the agent works to | The agent, who uses whoever is easiest to book |
| A bathroom | Fifteen to twenty years | The customer, if the record still exists anywhere |
| A leak or a burst | Unpredictable and always urgent | Whoever answered the phone last time |
| A filter or a system clean | Alongside the service, and never sold on its own | Nobody at all |
Two of those five are diary entries you already own. Most plumbing businesses hold them as a shoebox of old invoices rather than as a list of dates.
What belongs against the property rather than the person
- The boiler make, model and serial, with the date it went in
- Where the stopcock is, and whether it still turns
- Which parts were fitted, so the next one is ordered before the visit rather than after it
- Photographs of anything hidden, taken before it went back under the floor
- Who actually pays, when the occupier and the owner are two different people
- The service date, as a diary entry rather than an intention
Gas splits this trade in two
Whether you are registered to work on gas decides which half of the enquiries you can even answer. A plumber without it turns away boilers and services, which are the two most predictable repeat jobs the trade has.
A plumber with it competes on availability rather than on price, because a household with no heating in January is not collecting three quotes and comparing them over the weekend. Know what is in the property before anybody asks, and be the one who is easy to book.
