The deposit is the booking

A day of tattooing given away to a no show is a day you cannot get back, and the design time is already spent. Take a meaningful deposit at consultation, hold it against the sitting and stage payments across a large piece.

Deposits come off the final total.

One card rate of 2.5% plus 35p, with the platform fee inside it.

A sleeve is a relationship

Most serious work is a series of sittings across months, and the collector who comes back for the next piece is worth many walk-ins. Keep the design, the references, the healing notes and the aftercare on one record.

Consent forms stored with the record.

Unlimited customer records on every plan, yours to export at any time.

Running a tattoo artists business

A tattoo artist sells days rather than appointments. A Saturday given to somebody who does not arrive cannot be refilled at short notice, and the design for it was drawn on a Tuesday evening that nobody paid for.

The deposit is what makes custom work possible

Design time happens before the sitting and is unpaid unless the deposit covers it. A meaningful deposit taken at consultation is the only thing making speculative drawing viable, and it is the difference between an artist who draws for booked clients and one who draws for anybody who wanders in.

On large pieces stage the money across the sittings rather than settling at the end. A sleeve running over eight months should never sit as one accumulating debt, because by month six it is a sum the client has to find rather than a payment she is used to making.

Healing sets the calendar, not the client's enthusiasm

A large piece cannot be worked again until it has healed, which is a fortnight at the very least and considerably longer on a lower leg or anywhere that creases. Booking the next sitting too early wastes a day for both of you and produces worse work.

Book the next sitting at the end of the current one with the healing interval already applied. She is in the chair, the piece is visibly unfinished and it is the easiest booking you will ever take.

Aftercare should send automatically after every sitting rather than being explained over the noise of a machine while somebody is still bleeding. Most healing problems are aftercare problems, and a documented send protects you as much as it protects the tattoo.

Four ways a studio fills a day, and what each one leaves behind

Type of workHow the day fillsWhat it leaves behind
Walk-in flashWhoever comes through the door that afternoonA transaction, occasionally a client
A large custom projectSix to ten sittings across a yearA collector who books the next piece before this one heals
A guest spot in another cityA week sold out from one announcementClients you have no realistic way of seeing again
Cover-ups and reworksThe difficult days nobody else wantsYour highest rate and the strongest word of mouth you will get

A studio that counts how many clients came back for a second piece knows more about next year than one that counts how many tattoos it did.

What a tattoo studio gives away without noticing

  • Drawing time for consultations that never turn into a booking
  • A whole day lost to a no show, in a trade where a Saturday cannot be resold on the Friday
  • Redraws after a client changes the concept, absorbed as part of the service
  • Touch-ups offered indefinitely rather than inside a stated window
  • Consent forms and age verification stacked in a folder nobody could find under pressure
  • Artists renting a chair on a handshake, with the takings reconciled from memory on a Sunday

What a well run studio does

  • Takes a deposit at consultation that genuinely covers the design time
  • States the deposit and reschedule policy in writing before it is paid
  • Stages payment across sittings on anything running over months
  • Books the next sitting at the healing interval before the client leaves
  • Keeps designs, references, stencils and progress photographs on one record
  • Records consent and age verification against the client, findable years later
  • Sends aftercare automatically after every single sitting
  • Tracks how many clients returned for a second piece
