Responding to a data request

What to do when a customer asks for a copy of their data, and your one-month deadline.

2 min readUpdated 6 August 2026

Sometimes a customer will ask to see the information you hold about them. This is called a subject access request, and you have one calendar month to respond.

What they are entitled to

A copy of the personal data you hold about them, in a format they can read and take with them.

How Youzse helps

Youzse can gather everything held about a customer across your account and produce it for you as a clear report and a machine-readable file. You do not have to dig through the system by hand.

How to handle one

  1. 1When a customer asks, record the request and note the date, as your month runs from then.
  2. 2Use the data request tools in Youzse to produce their data.
  3. 3Check it over and share it with the customer securely.

A few things to know

  • The deadline is one calendar month, so start promptly
  • If you are unsure a request is genuine, you can confirm the person's identity first
  • Keep a note of how you responded, in case you need to show it later

If you are ever unsure how to handle a request, the Youzse team can point you in the right direction.

Common questions

How long do I have?

One month from the request. Start it the day it arrives rather than the week it is due.

Can I charge for it?

Not in normal circumstances. Requests are free.

What do I actually send?

The personal data you hold about them. An export of their record is the starting point.
